Off The Record Rewind - #002 - with Tommy Takeover

Off The Record Rewind - #002
with Tommy Takeover

Tommy was one of the first djs outside of Eire to get on board with the series and we've been big fans of his ever since. His eclectic & sometimes crazy sound moves flawlessly through genres to create a unique vibe altogether. Incorporating all things electro, fidget, dubstep, ragga, d&b and much more. Along with dropping a new mixtape our way we got a chance to have a chat with Tommy and find out what he's about.

OTR: So tell us a bit about what you've been up to since your first mix in the series?

Tommy: Since my last mix I've been going to a lot more clubnights to see other acts across Scotland, going up to little private & secret festivals and taking in the musical talents as inspiration for what I piece together myself, I've also been spending a lot of time on ableton messing around and coming up with a few bootlegs/re-vamps/wip's.

OTR: Sounds good, so hows the clubnight going?

Tommy: The clubnight (Level Up) that I run with Al The Kemist (Former Spaceball Resident) And Discobaw is doing great, So far we've booked Slamboree's Mike Freear & The McMash Clan, And are looking to get Mr Freear up for another show sometime soon. Recently we've all been getting asked to play at various events to represent Level Up either by ourselves or as a duo/trio.

OTR: Nice one, you've a proper unique sound so it's not surprising. Any thoughts on being asked to get on board with Off The Record?

Tommy: I was really happy to given the privilege to have a mix featured on the series last time, I think OTR is turning out to be really good thing with their selection of DJ's across Ireland & The World. It's great how every week you get a new side of a different genre, the mash-up style is brilliant!

OTR: I'm really loving the route you've taken with this mix, just like with your first OTR one we seem to select from the same record bag. What brought about the different style?

Tommy: This mix I've pieced together is a lot more broken beat orientated from the last one, with a lot of ragga influence. A bit different from last time to express my love for a lot of different types of music, and to hopefully inspire others to try new things!

OTR: That's what it's all about! What can we expect to see from you in the future?

Tommy: Well I think my online popularity is slowly beginning to get better as well along with my offline one with playing a lot more sets here and there at various nights along with my 2 other amigos!

So I'm just going to stick at it, Just keep improving my music and mixing capabilities, I'm currently awaiting to have a track mastered and placed in beatport by my good friend Ziggy Gee owner of Bootyshake Records.

OTR: Nice one, keep us posted on that. And lastly, who are you listening to yourself these days? Anyone you reckon people should be checking out?

Tommy: As for what I've been listening to really depends on how I'm feeling, I seem to go through stages of music and swap about what I'm enjoying from time to time. But by this mix I'm sure you could tell that it's breaks/garage/dub/reggae that I'm enjoying a lot of just now. But on my soundcloud I'm more electro orientated, as for artists I would say check out Phaeleh, Radikal Guru, Cian Finn, Breaksmafia, Rel1, Guigoo, Tolgar, Mafia Kiss & PrototypeRaptor.
